Image generation results improve more from lighting vocabulary than from any other change. Most people discover this by accident after months of stacking adjectives. A prompt that says beautiful, stunning, highly detailed, 8k is asking for quality in the abstract. A prompt that specifies a single hard key light at forty five degrees camera left, deep unfilled shadow, and a cool rim from behind is asking for something the model can actually render.
The reason is that quality words have no visual referent. Stunning does not describe photons. Lighting terms do. Photographers and cinematographers spent a century building precise language for how light behaves, and that vocabulary appears in the captions of the images these models learned from.

The six variables it always specifies. Key light quality, hard or soft, which controls shadow edge sharpness and does more emotional work than any other choice. Key direction and height, including the unsettling territory of underlighting. Fill ratio, which sets contrast and therefore drama. Rim or back light for separation from the background. Practical sources visible in frame, such as lamps and screens, which are what make an image read as photographed rather than rendered. Colour temperature and any deliberate mixing, since warm and cool in one frame is a reliable cinematic signature.
Why mood mapping works. Hard low-angle light with almost no fill has been the visual language of threat since early cinema, because it reproduces how a face looks lit by a fire below. Soft frontal light with high fill flatters and reassures, which is why it dominates commercial portraiture. These are learned conventions, and the model learned them too.
Practical notes. Ask for the same brief across several ratios, since a lighting setup that reads beautifully in a wide frame can look flat in a square crop. Change one variable at a time when iterating - people commonly rewrite everything after a poor result and lose the information about what actually mattered. Keep the briefs that work, because a lighting recipe is reusable across subjects in a way that a full prompt never is.
